Reds regarding the possible signing of Adam Wharton. I think it would be very important that we sign a real defensive midfielder to play alongside Wharton, to get the best out of him. If we think aboiut the plaers who partner him at Palace Lermer, Hughes etc, all prepared to get stuck in and are mobile.

Going back a while think Alonso With Mascherano that kind of partnership, probably not that good but we can hope.

18 Jun 2026 21:38:23
I don't understand that then, because where will Sobs and Wirtz play.
It's got to be Gravenberch, Sobs and Wirtz, or we sign a new number 6.

4 MF's are likely to leave in Endo, Jones, Alexis and Elliott, so we are going to need 2 more.

2

18 Jun 2026 23:15:50
We ain't paying no 100m for that Wharton fella, I can tell you that much.

4

19 Jun 2026 00:23:11
Don't see Endo leaving. One year left and he's happy to be a bit part player. At his age, not many coming in for him. Japan captain as well, so experienced leadership, plus was originally a CB, so depth there just in case.

3

19 Jun 2026 03:22:26
Never been on board with Wharton.

I think we need more dynamic and mobile midfielders who can do a bit of everything.

I'd be targeting James Garner over Wharton.

3

19 Jun 2026 06:30:02
I'm pretty sure Endo has retired from international football now.

He's in his latter years. Will he want to see out his footballing career playing a couple of minutes here and there? Who knows?

Perhaps the new manager will see him as a key player like he does Gomez, Jones, Elliot, Chiesa & Darwin and build the team around them all.

19 Jun 2026 09:07:10
Indeed, Faith. Wharton ain't the one esp. in this high tempo, high press system Doni plays.

Hi ITKs, is it true that Leipzig have rejected our 100mn euros bid today? If yes, are we planning on going even higher? I know it's not my money, but it is already an awful lot to spend on someone who has had one good season in a big league. I hope we get it right either way.

2

18 Jun 2026 21:48:18
Not ITK, from what I've been reading, it's true, but an opening bid is just a formality, almost never accepted for a deal like this. Apparently there's only a 5m difference, so the deal will be done asap.

18 Jun 2026 23:18:10
*£15m.

Premier League Fixtures for season 2026-27 out tomorrow morning 10am, Friday 19th June.

Focus will be Crystal Palaces "Last" game of the Season, when Slot won it and Arsenal won it last year, Crystal Palace on both occasions gave the "Final" Guard of Honour to the PL winners.

Hopefully Anfield's last fixture of the season is Crystal Palace, three times on the run, two for LFC. Can History repeat again?

Saw a post on here and totally agree with it, Munoz running style really reminds me of Bellamy, that flat shoulder, stiff neck low style of sprinting.

10

18 Jun 2026 18:05:49
Munoz reminds me of Bellamy

6

18 Jun 2026 18:36:03
Really? How is he with a Five Iron?

21

18 Jun 2026 18:37:36
David?

9

18 Jun 2026 19:51:36
Well grapple me, grapenuts!

5

18 Jun 2026 19:51:40
We should ask Riise Sr. 😉

1

18 Jun 2026 16:00:41
Inter in for Palestra, no fee agreed yet.

0

18 Jun 2026 17:21:51
How many Palestras are there?

2

18 Jun 2026 18:32:08
They were in for him weeks back and offered less than Atalanta want. Just have a Google search for Palestra and Inter.

1

18 Jun 2026 20:39:11
How many Palestras does it take to change a lightbulb?

3

18 Jun 2026 21:29:14
Everything on the interweb being totally accurate and true at all times.

1

18 Jun 2026 15:56:18
Marco Palestra to City it seems, with Chelsea interested...

Maybe we should go for Kayode? Great young talent and already proven in prem.

2

18 Jun 2026 18:21:13
Sounds like he's going to Inter.

3

18 Jun 2026 23:17:30
Someone already said Inter is his destination. Who to believe?

2

18 Jun 2026 15:12:48
Just for fun. Which past or present LFC players in their pomp (1 goalkeeper, 1 defender, 1 midfielder and 1 attacker) from the Premier League era would cost over £150million in today's market?

2

18 Jun 2026 15:49:23
Ali, Virg, Stevie G, Suarez.

12

18 Jun 2026 15:55:37
GK-Clemence
Def- Hansen
Mid-Souness
St- King Kenny.

9

18 Jun 2026 15:56:52
John Barnes, surely? Though I don't know if he counts, his best years were pre-PL, but he did play in the PL for Liverpool. McManaman and Fowler too, I guess, and probably Xabi, even if he didn't hit his peak with us. Unfortunately, you'd have to put Owen in there too.

4

18 Jun 2026 15:57:15
Ali
Hyypia
Gerrard
Torres.

2

18 Jun 2026 16:03:09
Sorry, didn't read post properly. Go with JK23 selection, but Salah for Chewy.

5

18 Jun 2026 16:26:29
Peggy Arphexad
Bjorn Tore Kvame
Salif Diao
Sean Dundee.

8

18 Jun 2026 16:27:21
Ali
Virg
Stevie
Suarez.

4

18 Jun 2026 16:33:09
We seem to be correlating around similar picks:

1) Ali
2) Virg
3) Stevie
4) Salah.

4

18 Jun 2026 16:51:03
Loris Karius
Paul Konchesky
Christian Poulsen
Charlie Adam.

9

18 Jun 2026 17:07:51
During the EPL era and players from the start to today?

I would say Alisson, VVD, Gerrard, and Salah. I would add that Suarez and maybe even Mane would squeeze in there. The rationale being that 2 Spanish teams and 1 English team (Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Chelsea) were, and still are, capable of paying idiotic prices for players they really want.

2

18 Jun 2026 17:09:46
Ian Rush
Peter Beardsley
Alan Hansen
John Barnes

Rushy was the original pressing machine and scored for fun.

1

18 Jun 2026 17:11:28
Liver_La, It was £150 million, not thousand!

Seriously though, how embarrassing that these were all first team players for the club (three of them at the same time!).

1

18 Jun 2026 17:18:15
Not sure a keeper would, but I'd go:
Clemence
Hansen
Gerard
Torres.

1

18 Jun 2026 17:20:28
stouffer,

I was thinking more £150. 😂

4

18 Jun 2026 17:22:40
John Barnes
Graeme Souness
Steven Gerrard
Ian Rush.

1

18 Jun 2026 17:55:33
Clemence
Hansen
Gerrard
Fowler.

1

18 Jun 2026 18:02:36
Clemence definitely
Stevie
Souness
Hansen
Barnes.

2

18 Jun 2026 18:20:26
Didn't he ask for players from the "Premier League era"?

3

18 Jun 2026 21:31:31
@ArAy, Yep, the OP did say from the PL era.

3

18 Jun 2026 22:40:48
I'll only pick players that never won the league with us. Reina, Hyppia, Gerrard, Torres. Not sure Reina would've been worth £150m though, nor Hyppia. Gerrard and Torres in their prime were the best in their positions in the world.

18 Jun 2026 14:56:35
I was heartened by the warm welcome of fellow posters the other day, really appreciate all of you

Given I'm Asian and with the WC ongoing, I just wonder from fellow Eds and posters, who is the best Asian player you've seen in the PL?

Personally, it was hands down Park Ji Sung - stamina, skills, quick, game intelligence, discipline and versatile. He had everything in the locker and was a proven and consistent winner.

Son Heung-Min would be next, and I often wonder how we would be if we had him instead of Firmino (not that one was better than the other, they would have offered different things and I note at one point we were choosing between the two), or how it would be if we had both! Alas, he was with spurs in the entire PL journey and didn't taste as much success as he probably should have.

I really hoped that Minamino and Endo would be great with us. Both did well, but perhaps wasn't as pivotal as Park or Son per say for their respective teams.

10

18 Jun 2026 15:58:36
Son given who the other guy played for.

Outside of the Premier League, Nakata all day long!

2

https://liverpool-rumours.co.uk/uploads/thumb_Ed001.png avatar{Ed001's Note - when Nakata signed for AS Roma, they produced a polo shirt with his name on it and the sales paid for the transfer fee on its own.}

18 Jun 2026 16:02:26
Has to be Sonny, incredible footballer and top lad, would have loved for him to have been a Liverpool player. I loved Kagawa as a player at BVB, of course, it was harder to like him as a United player and he made a bit less of an impression there.

Okazaki was more than decent, too. Early days still, and he's not perfect, but I like watching Khusanov a lot.

2

18 Jun 2026 16:02:44
I always wonder how Keisuke Honda would have done in PL. We were linked with him a couple of times, and I remember getting excited with the prospect of him joining us. Had a wicket left foot too.

7

18 Jun 2026 16:05:26
Surely there is no comparison between Park Ji-Sung and Son simply on their abilities and performances. It was not Son's fault he was at Spurs, he did whatever he could to drag them up. There's no way Park Ji-Sung was a better player than Son.

6

18 Jun 2026 16:10:29
Red_Riding_Hood, Keisuke had a great engine too.

God, it's been over 10 years since I last cracked that joke!

9

18 Jun 2026 16:27:33
Park Ji Sung was the first name that came to mind. He was the first real Asian superstar playing the PL when I was growing up. But I think Son is a better player. Park is mainly known for his endless stamina, but Son is just a more complete footballer for me.

3

18 Jun 2026 16:38:11
I thought Son was a brilliant player and he seemed a nice bloke as well.

3

18 Jun 2026 16:42:22
Son.

I desperately wanted him at LFC, loved his style and attitude, but can't complain because we had an excellent Mane on the left.

Son and Alexis Sanchez are 2 players I really wanted when we were linked.

4

18 Jun 2026 16:47:38
I remembered how desperately I wanted us to sign Keisuke Honda. I got so excited when we were linked with him years back. But Son is probably the best out of them all. Park is more of a utility player, but Son is like one of the main stars in the Spurs team.

3

18 Jun 2026 16:48:54
Son. I personally thought that him leaving Spurs had a bigger negative impact on them than Kane leaving.

2

18 Jun 2026 16:48:56
Am I right in thinking Liverpool were deciding between Son and Firmino at the time, and decided to go with Firmino?

My word, what those two could have done together. I could be completely wrong, and it wasn't one or the other, but I seem to remember that being the case.

2

18 Jun 2026 17:11:31
What about Shinji Kagawa? He did very well with Dortmund under Klopp, before he joined ManU. Which basically ruined him.

2

18 Jun 2026 17:12:05
Who was the lad at Celtic who used to score crazy free kicks? Can't remember his name, but always thought he would have been great in the Premiership.

1

18 Jun 2026 17:12:46
Mango, I've heard that too. If we'd got Son, we wouldn't have signed Benteke.

But if that had happened, Rogers may have stayed on longer and we may not have got Klopp.

The world moves in mysterious ways!

3

18 Jun 2026 17:04:35
Oh wow, was Park a dick Ed mate? didn't know that and the little I saw of him, he looked like a decent chap

0

https://liverpool-rumours.co.uk/uploads/thumb_Ed001.png avatar{Ed001's Note - he was known for ignoring people asking for autographs etc. Not like Stevie (who used bodyguards to pretend he had somewhere else to be so he couldn't stop long) G, who used to at least sign a few, Park would literally just ignore them totally. Every United fan I know would moan about him blanking them.}

3

18 Jun 2026 18:10:58
Charlie, that was Shuksuke Nakamura that played with Celtic. Was a superstar up here, I actually thought he did end up playing in the EPL, but I could be wrong.

2

18 Jun 2026 19:56:55
Has to be Son, although I would Youssi Benayoun would be a pretty close runner up.

0

18 Jun 2026 20:18:01
Can remember when Son was playing at Anfield... There was a corner and someone shouted from the Kop, 'throw us another pie in the fat'...

0

18 Jun 2026 21:08:54
Rugby, yes mate, that was him. Once watched him score an impossible goal against St Mirren, I was sitting directly behind him. It was one of his special free kicks. He didn't play in the Premiership, unfortunately.

1

18 Jun 2026 21:17:11
True that about Son based on what many shared, just that he didn't quite win as much for me.

Then again, I am reminded that my own question was about the best player, and, football being a team sport, unfortunately, some of the best and most talented players were just never in teams good enough to win much.

Also liked the various names mentioned. I did like Youssi Benayoun. Honda would have been interesting, but yes, Nakata in the 90s and early 2000s was quite something, though he only had a very brief spell in England towards the end of his career.

1

18 Jun 2026 22:02:01
A dose of nostalgia seeing Nakata's name. I remember watching Football Italia on Channel 4 as a kid with the likes of Nakata standing out, which is some feat given the quality of the league at the time.

1

19 Jun 2026 09:11:15
Kazuyoshi Miura was the first Asian player I ever heard of in the 90's. He actually played in the Brazilian League for Santos, Pele's team.

A living monument in Japanese football and a true pioneer.

As of a couple of years ago, "Kazu" was still playing in his early 50's in the J-League second division.

Legend.
